The A⁺DU is a 21st-century Accessory Dwelling Unit prototype that makes independent living possible for people of all ages and abilities. Created by Swift Lee Office, it’s a flexible, energy-efficient home that adapts gracefully to life’s changes.

This 467-square-foot home features an open living area, full kitchen, bedroom, loft, and modern bathroom with a roll-in shower and built-in bench. Guided by universal design, the A⁺DU offers adjustable-height countertops, accessible sinks, and integrated smart-home features. Its compact footprint supports both aging in place and multi-generational living, fitting naturally into Los Angeles neighborhoods.

Sustainability is built in—from the solar-ready roof and rainwater collection tank to energy-efficient heating and ventilation. Finish options such as board-and-batten siding, smooth stucco, cedar shake, or black horizontal cladding let each homeowner personalize their A⁺DU.

Recognized with an Honorable Mention by the L.A. County Housing Innovation Challenge, the A⁺DU expands the idea of the accessory unit into one that is Accessible, Adaptable, Affordable, and Aspirational—a small home designed for a changing world.
